R2D2, that lovable Astromech Droid from Star Wars fame, was named by George Lucas during the making of "American Graffiti". It appears that Mr. Lucas was working late one evening and a co-worker asked him for "Reel 2, Dialog 2". Supposedly George wrote down the abbreviation and saved them for future use.
