Wait...WHAT?

For six years now, the women of Canton Township, Michigan, don their most elegant and attend a fancy soiree to raise money for several charities.  Where do these women get their extravagant attire?  Probably for the very, very back of the closet - or maybe even their attic.  Wait....WHAT?

I'm talking about the MOM PROM! where women are encouraged to put on their old prom, bridesmaid or even wedding dresses and dance the night away!  This event has brought in thousands of dollars for cancer research as well as other charitable groups.

Betsy Crapps, creator of this event, and her friends came up with the idea after Betsy wore her pink puffy prom dress to an Academy Awards party as a joke.  It was such a hit that all the women wanted to put on their tacky and dated dresses for a night out of dinner and dancing, all designed to raise money for charity.  After a local newspaper ran a story about the event, Betsy was overwhelmed with calls from women who wanted to participate in the next Prom. Since then, she has consulted for an event in Seattle last year and one scheduled for April in Middletown, N.Y. She's also heard from mothers interested in hosting similar parties in Indiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Crapps, the assistant director of faith formation at St. Thomas a'Becket Catholic Church, said her dream is to see Mom Proms held across the country on the same day.  Her motto:  "We're changing the world, ladies, one prom at a time."
